With 20 years professional cake making experience, Valerie Latham brings beautiful creative artistry, a passion for quality and exquisite detail to her cakes.
Valerie studied ‘A’ Level Home Economics followed by a Hotel Management Course which involved training in all areas of the Kitchen, including her favourite; pastry. She discovered a flair for artistic presentation, which, coupled with her talents as an Artist, equipped her with the skills necessary to create elaborate wedding cakes.
She recalls how in the early nineties, she made a particular cake for her son’s 4th birthday and realized it was a vocation. “I remember the cake well, a bright red fire engine - Fireman Sam's Jupiter – it received so many compliments that I was soon inundated with orders for all of my son’s friends birthdays, inspiring me to make a business out of something I was passionate about.” She also undertook commissions for Wedding Cakes from one of London’s top 5 star hotels based on her fine sugar craft detailing.
 
In 1994, Valerie set up the first sugar craft and specialist cake shop in the North Wales resort town of Rhyl, naming it ‘Finishing Touches’. Soon, her sugar craft expertise was in demand and the shop was expanded to include a sugar craft classroom. She also started teaching Adult evening classes at a local high school.

As her reputation grew, she began attending wedding fairs throughout North Wales and North West England, receiving orders from Cheshire, Manchester and The Wirral. Finishing Touches moved to a larger high street location, and specialised in weddings, celebrations and other styles of cake including ‘naughty’ cakes until 1999, when Valerie and her family decided to seek a new way of life in the Costa Blanca.

Thinking that demand for English style cakes would be limited in Spain, she concentrated on selling property for the first years. However, word of mouth meant that demand for her cakes quickly began to grow to today’s success. She has an amazing eye for detail, rendering her one of the specialist Wedding Cake Makers on the Costas, but not limited to wedding cakes, but birthday cakes, anniversaries, corporate and cakes for all occasions.

‘Seeing a client’s reaction to a cake is so satisfying and fulfilling,’ Valerie enthuses, adding, ‘not everyone gets to work with their passions in life.’ Receiving glowing testimonies regularly, many seem to agree.
